What was the biggest surprise as an entrepreneur?
Entrepreneurship can be a roller coaster – good news, bad news, amazing partnerships, disappointing partnerships and a constant flow of exciting opportunities that need to be balanced against staying focused. We learned early on that maintaining perspective and managing expectations on any given day is a crucial part of executing on our larger vision.
What is a sign that you should not be an entrepreneur?
If you’re on the fence about entrepreneurship, you need to really evaluate what makes you happy in a work environment and ask yourself if you think you’ll be able to get that while in startup mode. You’ll be tested a lot as you get your startup off the ground so you have to go into it confident about the decision you’ve made on a personal level so that, rather than questioning or doubting, you can focus on building a great business and supporting a team.
How did you know you were ready to be an entrepreneur?
We came out of HBS feeling very comfortable about our ability to take risks – the academic experience gave us confidence in the process of making difficult decisions quickly and with limited information while the network (professors, alums, friends) make us we have the ability to call on experts for guidance when needed.
